Even as a Canadian, I found it interesting to read of the draft Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) released recently for public input. The final document is expected to be available in late spring. I remember efforts to develop such standards at the provincial, district and even school level throughout my career.
It is being met with both support and concern, especially in the early-childhood sector. Supporters applaud the opportunity to have a consistent framework to guide instruction. Opponents are concerned that it will not address developmental differences in young children and will bring even more of an academic focus to the pre-K and K classrooms. The following link gives a good overview of both sides of the issue and is worth the read, even for Canadians. Is this something we may be facing in the future?
