Internet Addiction in S. Korea
April 26, 2010
Our local newspaper had an interesting (and frightening) article on the epidemic of internet addiction in S. Korea. They related several real-life tragedies resulting from this problem. The government and major gaming companies have teamed upand will be introducinga "late-night shutdown" of certain popular games for users under the age of 18 and are looking at other options to try to control the problem.

As an educator, I've been concerned about the influence of these games on our children. With the internet being so accessible through cell phones now, this is a worldwide concern. The article states that "counsellors visit elementary schools to teach children about safe Internet usage in hopes of preventing Internet addiction early on". Teachers need to be watching for signs of this problem and working with parents and professionals to intervene.
